Classic Scones (painted florals)

British scones are a classic baked good that are beloved for their simplicity, versatility, and delicious taste. Now, take your scones to the next level with a painted twist! Inspired by the painted sourdough trend, these scones become edible art with a touch of gel color and a brush. It’s an easy and fun way to add a creative, colorful flair to a classic bake.

Ingredients

- 350g self-raising flour

- 1 tsp baking powder

- 85g butter (cold, cubed)

- 3 tbsp caster sugar

- 175ml milk

- Squeeze of lemon juice

- 1 egg and few drops of water whisked (egg wash for glazing)

Optional Painting Ingredients

- Gel food colors (your choice of colors)

- Thick white icing coloring (e.g., Wilton White)

Yields 12-14 scones

Instructions

1. Mix the milk and lemon juice. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

2. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder. Rub in the butter with your fingers until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Finally add the sugar and stir.

3. Gradually add the buttermilk to the dry mix, stirring until it forms a soft dough.

4. Lightly flour your work surface. Roll or press the dough to about 3cm height. Cut out scones using a round cutter 5.5cm.

5. Place scones on a lined baking tray and brush with egg wash.

6. Optional painting:

- Create a color palette by mixing your gel food colors with the white icing coloring to make opaque colors.

- Using a clean food-safe brush, paint designs on the tops of the egg-washed scones.

7. Bake at 200°C fan for 8-10 minutes until golden and the painted designs are vibrant.

8. Cool slightly, then enjoy with jam and cream!
